The science behind happiness
What is positive psychology?
Positive Psychology is the scientific study of the strengths, characteristics and actions that enable individuals and communities to thrive. It aims to reveal the factors which can enable human flourishing, both at a subjective, individual and group level. The distinctive objective of positive psychology is to make evidence-based studies about these ingredients which are revealed through the research of positive functioning.
Positive psychology in practice
The practice of positive psychological findings is parallel with the academic, research-oriented side of the perspective. The aim is to use evidence-based results in a way to help people flourishing: to make interventions for individuals and communities for better performance, to help students and youth in engagement, to allow families to have more positive experiences together in order to increase their satisfaction with the relationship.
Well-Being and Flourishing
‘Wellbeing’ is not a one-dimensional idea but a multifaceted construct composed of different elements. Wellbeing is sometimes used interchangeably with the word ‘happiness’. In positive psychology, ‘happiness’ is one of the components of well-being, rather than the only consideration. Wellbeing is more than the absence of ill-being. It is something over and above not suffering.
‘Flourishing’ focuses on building upon the strengths of the individual to build the resilience to overcome challenges and enhance wellbeing. The capacity to work from one’s strengths creates better, stronger and more positive relationships between and within individuals, families and communities.
The PERMA model of wellbeing posits that there are five well-being indicators:
· Positive Emotion
