Nahr El Jawz Hike

 

Nahr El Jawz (Walnut River) originates from the mountains above Tannourine and flows southward, emptying into the sea between Batroun and Hamath. Its beauty peaks in spring when wildflowers in vibrant colors line the riverbanks, and the rushing water creates a lively sound. Walnut trees, which thrive near the river, give the valley its name.

 

Historically, Nahr El Jawz valley was the only route for armies to reach Batroun, leading to the construction of the Msaylha Fortress for protection. On February 24th, 1998, it was listed as a National and Historic Heritage Site.

 

The hike has two levels:

• Level 5: Starting from Ibrin, you’ll pass through a pine forest, descend to the river, and walk along its banks, including some adventurous sections near the water canal. The hike continues to Kaftoun and ends with a bus ride to Kfarhay.
• Level 3: A gentle, flat trail starting from Beksmayya, walking along the riverbank with narrow passages and scenic spots. After the hike, you'll take a car to Kaftoun and then Kfarhay.

 

In Kaftoun, the monastery dedicated to the Mother of God is a unique structure, carved into a red limestone cliff. Inside, you’ll find a rare Byzantine icon dating back to the 11th century.

 

The hike concludes at Deir Mar Youhanna Maroun in Kfarhay, where you’ll visit the 7th-century monastery, home to the skull of Mar Maroun, and a priceless collection of old books, ancient clothing, and instruments.

 

After the hike, we will stop for a homemade lunch at the Jdabra campsite before heading back to Beirut

NAHR EL JAWZ, KAFTOUN

Randonnée

 

Nahr El Jawz (rivière du noyer) prend sa source dans les montagnes au-dessus de Tannourine et coule vers le sud, se jetant dans la mer entre Batroun et Hamath. Sa beauté atteint son apogée au printemps, lorsque les fleurs sauvages aux couleurs vibrantes bordent les rives de la rivière, et que l’eau tumultueuse crée un son vivant. Les noyers, qui prospèrent près de la rivière, ont donné leur nom à la vallée.

Historiquement, la vallée de Nahr El Jawz était le seul chemin par lequel les armées pouvaient atteindre Batroun, ce qui a conduit à la construction de la forteresse de Msaylha pour la protection. Le 24 février 1998, elle a été inscrite comme site national et historique.

 

La randonnée comporte deux niveaux :
• Niveau 5 : En partant d’Ibrin, vous traverserez une forêt de pins, descendrez vers la rivière et marcherez le long de ses rives, avec quelques passages aventureux près du canal d’eau. La randonnée continue jusqu’à Kaftoun, puis se termine par un trajet en bus jusqu’à Kfarhay.
• Niveau 3 : Un sentier facile et plat partant de Beksmayya, longeant la rivière avec des passages étroits et des vues pittoresques. Après la randonnée, vous prendrez une voiture pour Kaftoun, puis Kfarhay.

 

À Kaftoun, le monastère dédié à la Mère de Dieu est une structure unique, taillée dans une falaise de calcaire rouge. À l’intérieur, vous trouverez une rare icône byzantine datant du XIe siècle.

 

La randonnée se termine au Deir Mar Youhanna Maroun à Kfarhay, où vous visiterez le monastère du VIIe siècle, qui abrite le crâne de Saint Maroun, ainsi qu’une précieuse collection de livres anciens, de vêtements et d’instruments antiques.

Après la randonnée, nous nous arrêterons pour un déjeuner fait maison au campement de Jdabra, avant de rentrer à Beyrouth.
