After witnessing Israel’s 2024 onslaught from abroad, a filmmaker returns to her village in South Lebanon, where conversations with her family bring their losses to the surface. Through the ritual of a card game and family gatherings, the film reflects on the war's threat to memory and tradition.

Joude Bazzoun is an emerging filmmaker of Lebanese and Moroccan origin. Her work seeks to use film as a tool to nurture solidarity and inspire resistance, focusing on the Palestinian and Lebanese struggle for liberation.

عمي منير رجل سبعيني أمضى آخر عقدين من عمره يكتب كتابا يعتقد أنّه سيسقط النظام العالمي والنظام الرأسمالي. يتمّسك باعتقاده في ظلّ استخفاف محيطه والتغيّرات السياسية في لبنان. أحاول أن أغوص في دوافع كتابته المستمرة. يشاركني عمي منير أسراره ومأساة استشهاد أخيه في الحرب الأهلية ، ليتّضح في النهاية أنّ الكتاب ليس إلّا طريقة لمقاومة شعوره بالعجز.

My uncle Mounir, a man in his seventies, has spent the last two decades writing a book he believes will overthrow the global and capitalist systems. Despite his  surroundings’ skepticism and Lebanon’s political changes, he persists. Through his story and the tragedy of his brother’s death in the civil war, the book emerges as his way of resisting helplessness.

من خلال مشاهد بيروت وجنوب لبنان، يتأمل مخرج شاب آثار الحرب التي تركتها على الأمكنة والأشياء والذاكرة. بين مساحات مألوفة وأخرى متضرّرة، يرصد الفيلم دورات العنف المتكررة في لبنان، متسائلاً عمّا يبقى حين يصبح الدمار جزءاً من الحياة اليومية.

Through the landscapes of Beirut and Southern Lebanon, a young filmmaker observes the traces left by war on places, objects, and memory. Moving through damaged and familiar spaces, the film reflects on Lebanon’s recurring cycles of violence, asking what remains when destruction becomes part of everyday life.

Synopsis

في عام ٢٠٢٦ وبعد وقف إطلاق النار الأول، تغادر عائلة محمد المكان الذي نزحت إليه وتتجه إلى بعلبك، بعدما بقيت ضاحية بيروت الجنوبية غير آمنة في ظل استمرار التهديدات الإسرائيلية وخرق وقف إطلاق النار. أمّا محمد، فيبقى في بيروت بسبب عمله ودراسته الجامعية. ومع ازدياد المسافة بينه وبين عائلته، يجد محمد نفسه وحيدًا في مدينة لم تعد تشبه المكان الذي اعتاد أن يسمّيه بيتًا. وبين الخوف والنزوح والشعور المتزايد بالغربة، يبدأ بالتساؤل ليس فقط عن المكان الذي ينتمي إليه، بل أيضًا عن هويته كمسلم شيعي في لبنان، وعن معنى أن يكون للإنسان وطن وبيت في بلد لم يعد فيه أيّ منهما أمرًا مسلّمًا به.

In 2026, following the first ceasefire, Mohammad’s family leaves the place where they had been displaced and moves to Baalbek, as Beirut’s southern suburbs remain unsafe amid continued Israeli threats and violations of the ceasefire. Mohammad, however, stays behind in Beirut for work and university. As he navigates the uncertainty of living alone in a city that no longer feels like home, he begins to question not only where he belongs, but also his identity as a Muslim Shia in Lebanon. Between displacement, fear, and a growing sense of alienation, Mohammad searches for a sense of belonging in a country where home is no longer something he can take for granted.

تلتقي ريان عباس وعبدالله وعلي في روضة الشهداء في عيناثا، حيث يبدأ البحث معًا عن بقايا من الروضة التي دمرها العدو الإسرائيلي في حرب العام ٢٠٢٤، ثم يروي أصدقاؤها قصصهم عن المكان وعلاقتهم به وبمن فيه من قبل تدميرها حتى اليوم.

Rayan meets Abbas, Abdullah, and Ali at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Aainata, where they search through what remains after its destruction by the Israeli military during the 2024 war. As they explore, they share personal stories of the cemetery, their connection to it, and their memory with those buried there.

Rayan Bassam is a Journalism and Digital Media graduate from Al-Maaref University, holding a Master 1 in Journalism from Lebanese University. She documents place, people, memory, in relation with the identity, particularly in South Lebanon, through multimedia storytelling.

في تسجيل صوتيّ واحد لأمها، تحيك زينب قصّة فتاة في وجه الموت، لتصيغ بعضاً من آثاره في وجوه لا زالت تعيش في الصور تعيد التجربة ترميم ما تبقى من الذاكرة وتطرح الوطن سؤالاً أمام ما تبقى من معانٍ له.

Guided by a voice recording of her mother, Zainab pieces together the story of a young woman standing at the threshold of death. In doing so, she uncovers the traces of the story in the faces that are preserved by old photographs. 

The journey becomes an act of restoring an intergenerational memory while questioning the meaning of homeland and what survives when everything else has been lost.

Zainab Saad is a Lebanese filmmaker, writer, and creative director working across film, writing, and visual storytelling. Her practice is rooted in an interest in memory, identity, women’s history and the interrelationship of individual experience and collective history. Her films explore how stories survive through images, voices, and inherited memories, often moving between the intimate and the historical. With a background in literature and film, she is interested in filmmaking as a space where memory can be reconstructed, questioned, and reimagined.
