Films by Oraib Toukan made between 2016 and 2022 that engage with Palestine —Via Dolorosa (21 min), When Things Occur (28 min), and Offing (28 min)— that explore visibility, distance in time and space to suffering, and the political economy of images of violence. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the artist.
The event is part of The Public Life of Empathy, a multidisciplinary project exploring what empathy becomes when it is placed under the pressure of war and genocide: how writers and artists negotiate the psychological, ethical, and political demands of witnessing violence, and what it means to encounter the suffering of others through language, images, and representation.
