Claude Monet. In the Light of the Moment

Germany, 2020, 52 min, German with English subtitles. Director: Mathias Frick.
Followed by a discussion (see details below).

2026 marks the centenary of Claude Monet’s death. At BAFF, we commemorate this anniversary with Claude Monet. In the Light of the Moment a German film dedicated to the French master who broke with academic conventions and challenged the art world in the 1870s.

The film takes us from Paris to Normandy and Giverny on a dazzling journey in the footsteps of Claude Monet, accompanied by German photographer Christoph Irrgang, who travelled across and photographed the landscapes immortalised by the artist.

To mark the bicentenary of photography, a discussion in English will bring together Mathias Frick, the film’s director, photographer Christoph Irrgang, and Dr. Joseph Rustom, Director of the Oriental Library of Beirut. Together, they will explore the role of photography and its dialogue with painting. Three contemporary perspectives will meet that of the master of the Water Lilies.
