Created in December 2017 by Kirill Serebrennikov and Yuri Possokhov for the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the ballet Nureyev was subsequently withdrawn from the institution’s repertoire. In March 2026, it returned to the stage at the Staatsballett Berlin, where its revival was warmly received by critics. Blending opera, music, theatre and dance into a total stage production, Nureyev traces the tumultuous life of Rudolf Nureyev (1938–1993): from his early years in the Soviet Union to his spectacular defection to the West in 1961, while highlighting his enduring influence on Western ballet and his passionate love affairs.
