Over the course of a single day, a novelist, paralyzed by his own material success, and his wife, even more acutely aware of her own despair, are forced to confront the death of their marriage, an emotional and spiritual anguish made both acutely painful and abstractedly detached through the unflinching performances of Moreau, Mastroianni, and Vitti, and through the uncompromising precision of Antonioni’s framing and cutting.
